current understanding has been derived from previous understanding,
either by building on it or showing a flaw and developing alternatives.
Einstein was largely inspired by his peers and recent history like Maxwell and Dirac, IIRC.
He
developed little in a proverbial vacuum. Maxwell’s equations showed
light’s speed which motivated Einstein to consider what is perceived at
different velocities. The rest is history…and a shitload of math.
